About Us Based in Torpoint in South East Cornwall, the choir is known not only for their singing, but also for their distinctive uniforms. The men wear Cornish tartan kilts with black jackets and the ladies attractive long, green dresses with a tartan sash. How it began The choir was formed in 1994 by Phil Carrigan, now Musical Director of the Polperro Fishermen’s Choir. Originally, its members were drawn from the Rame Male Voice Choir and the Torpoint Lady Singers. Today, members also come from other parts of South East Cornwall and Plymouth. The Kessenyan Singers have only had three MDs. When Phil Carrigan left in 2004, Paul Morris (already a valued member of the choir) took over. In January 2009, Liz Sidebotham was appointed to this role. Where we sing The Kessenyan Singers perform at a wide range of venues: from more formal concerts in churches to special Christmas performances at such popular attractions as the Eden Project and Mount Edgcumbe and appearances at local charity events. As well as raising hundreds of pounds each year for good causes, the Kessenyans also make sure that they have a lot of fun. Regular social activities for choir members ensure that this happens. In addition to performing in Cornwall, the choir regularly gives concerts in other parts of the country and abroad. Outside England, visits have been made to Wales, Northern Ireland and Canada. In particular, a close relationship has been forged with two Canadian choirs: the Spirit Singers from the Bruce Peninsula and the Addison Consort from Cambridge, Ontario As a result, the Kessenyan Singers have performed in Canada three times and return visits to Cornwall have been made by the Canadian choirs.
